HADRIAN'S WALL

Published for the first time in the autumn of 2007, an educational version of this software is now ready. Designed and written by John Higham, formerly Head of History at the Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton, the program is based on his experience of leading groups of all ages along the Wall. The text was checked by Dr David Breeze, one of the leading experts on the Roman frontier and the CD was enthusiastically reviewed in the spring edition of the CWAAS Newsletter

The first part, illustrated by dozens of maps and diagrams, explains in clear jargon-free language the events leading to the building of Hadrian’s Wall, the main features of the Roman frontier, its impact on the area and its later history.

The second part takes the form of a photo-tour of all the most important sites along the Wall, with over 300 full colour photos. The individual sites are examined in detail, explaining what to look at and what the evidence means. In many cases, the individual features are ‘reconstructed’ over the photographs of their present day remains. There is also a guide to the museums along the Wall, short biographies of the Roman Emperors associated with Britain and a useful and sophisticated search facility.

Hadrian’s Wall works on PCs running versions of Windows from ‘98 to Vista. There are two versions – The Stand-alone version cost £10 and can be run direct from the CD on a single computer. The Network version is on special offer this term at a cost of £30.  It includes a full site and network licence and can be installed on one or more networks and/or stand-alone computers on the same school/college site, as well as on the personal PCs of those teaching staff involved in planning course or field work. Either version can be obtained, post free, from:
